Volgens kol. Ronél Otto, provinsiale woordvoerder van die polisie, was die slagoffer klaarblyklik op pad om by die bank te gaan geld deponeer.

“Hy is by die deur van die bank oorval en in die been geskiet deur twee verdagtes. Die verdagtes het die sak geld geneem en gevlug. In hierdie stadium is ons nog nie seker van die totale bedrag wat gebuit is nie,” sê Otto.

Volgens Otto het een van die speurders op die verdagtes se voertuig losgebrand en ‘n band getref, maar ondanks dit het hulle steeds weggekom.

Teen Dinsdagoggend het Otto bevestig dat nog geen arrestasies gemaak is nie.

Durban - An elderly woman was punched in the face and had a knife held to her throat during a brutal attack in Sea Cow Lake, Durban, at the weekend.

The 67-year-old, who requested anonymity as her attackers remain at large, told of her terror during the ordeal where both she and her husband were assaulted.

"We were just about to close the shop [a supermarket she and her husband own] and I went into the car which was parked nearby. I think they [a group of armed men] were waiting for us because my husband locked up the shop and before he could even sit down they were around him," she said.  

"They shouted at him to give them the keys, but I had them so I passed them to him and then one of them came around and opened my door. Then they took me out and they were shouting at me to give... the money and I gave him both my cell phones," she added.

She told of how they then began to beat her husband, and when she had nothing more to give, they became violent with her.

In the scuffle, another employee was shot by one of the robbers.

"I thought he was going to cut my throat and I was so scared. At that moment our lives were more important than the car," she added.

The woman said that moments later, the thieves had crashed the car in their haste to escape, having stolen nothing from the supermarket.

ANOTHER #MURDER ? : Unidentified businessman killed in hail of bullets while visiting mother's grave

Johannesburg - A Fordsburg businessman was killed in a hail of bullets while visiting his mother’s grave at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg on Saturday morning, Sophiatown police have confirmed.

Spokesperson Brigadier Susan Crafford confirmed the 43-year-old man’s body was found with eight bullet wounds.

Three men driving in a charcoal Suzuki are believed to be behind the attack, she said.

“Two [of the] suspects jumped over the graveyard fence using a mini step ladder and started to shoot at the victim,” Crafford said.

The victim, who had been driving a silver Lexus, died at the scene. He had not been robbed.

Police are investigating a case of murder, she confirmed.

Joburg businessman Dieter Bergs spent a year being accused of murdering his wife in what he’d insisted was a home invasion – before his lawyers proved that the police ballistic tests were wrong.

On Monday, charges against Bergs were withdrawn in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

Now the SAPS faces questions not only around the reliability of its ballistics laboratory but also over whether it deliberately covered up the botched job.

The police didn’t respond to questions on this on Monday.

“The damage and defamation done as a result of that has been horrific,” said Bergs, who turns 80 on Sunday.

Geneé Bergs, 70, was shot dead in bed in their Parktown North home in March last year. They had been married for 15 years.

Bergs told police he had been in the study and his wife was asleep when he heard two loud bangs. When he went to investigate, he saw an intruder. He ran after the man and was shot in the hip.

There were two guns in the house, both 7.65mm pistols – one that Bergs had borrowed from a friend for protection and was kept next to the bed, and one he’d acquired legally in 1976, but had lost and forgotten about.

In late April last year, Geneé’s family found Bergs’s 1976 gun in the house and handed it to the police. SAPS forensic analyst Warrant Officer Thabo Seanego compared it to the two spent cartridges – a 7.65mm spent bullet and a fragment of a fired bullet jacket found at the murder scene. Seanego’s affidavit said that while the spent bullet and fragment couldn’t be linked to anything, the cartridge cases from the crime scene had been fired by Bergs’s gun.

Seanego’s report was the case against Bergs.

On September 23, Bergs was arrested and charged with his wife’s murder. He was released on bail of R10 000, and the next day, a gardener found a gun in the Bergs’s garden. This was the borrowed gun that was kept near the bed.

Seanego inspected this second gun and the crime scene evidence, and concluded that neither spent bullet nor fragment was fired from this gun.

But he didn’t mention the crucial evidence – the two spent cartridge cases.

Bergs’s lawyer, Joburg attorney Ian Small-Smith, a consultant to BDK Attorneys, brought in independent forensic ballistics expert Wollie Wolmarans.

After weeks of haggling with police, Wolmarans was able to get Bergs’s legal 1976 gun to compare with the crime scene exhibits, under the watch of police expert Lieutenant-Colonel Lucas Visser, who conducted his own tests.

Both Wolmarans and Visser unequivocally ruled out Bergs’s gun as the murder weapon.

“There was not even the faintest idea that these exhibits could have been fired from the same gun as in their tests and my tests. There were not even likenesses,” said Wolmarans. “It’s the worst I’ve ever had.”

Both also concluded that someone had tampered with the second firearm.

Wolmarans wasn’t allowed access to the second gun, but saw the spent cartridges from the tests on it, while Visser’s report lists six points of damage – in other words tampering – on that weapon.

That damage wasn’t in Seanego’s report.

“It wasn’t even mentioned that there was any damage to the gun. That’s why we say there was some cover-up,” said BDK attorney Johan Eksteen.

Wolmarans claimed the tampering was done by someone with more than a lay person’s knowledge.

BDK attorney Piet du Plessis said: “This could have had damning consequences for Dieter. Can you imagine if we still had the death penalty?

“The worst is that, having made the mistake, they kept quiet about it and it was left to us to discover.”

Bergs plans to move to the Cape.

“I lost my first wife after 37 years of marriage to cancer. I then married Geneé five years later. She has died. My daughter died five years ago. It has been a heavy time,” he said.

Bergs said he has survived due to his own “wonderful” family and friends, although Geneé’s family believed throughout that he was the killer and still don’t speak to him.

He doesn’t know if the police will ever find Geneé’s killer. “I hope they will.”

Die soektog is afgelas nadat die polisie hom ná ʼn lang soektog nie kon opspoor nie.” Hy het gesê dit is nog nie bevestig dat die oorskot wel Claassen is nie. “Die ondersoek duur voort en die polisie  probeer die identiteit  bevestig.”

ANOTHER MURDER? Blouberg man shot in the face after being attacked by 2 black attackers at home

A Blouberg man has been killed in a robbery at his Saxon Street home on Tuesday. 
According to a report from Table View police the victim returned home shortly after 19:00 with a friend and as he entered his garage he was confronted by two gunmen who stood on either side of his vehicle. 
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Adriana Chandler says the man and his friend were instructed to exit the vehicle and the suspects demanded the owner of the vehicle open the boot. “The victim threw the keys of the vehicle away and started to run out of the property. One of the suspects followed the victim and approximately 20 metres outside the property, fatally wounded the victim with a gunshot to the face. The suspect returned to his accomplice who was still waiting at the vehicle with the man’s friend and took a bag with unknown belongings. The suspects fled the scene in a getaway vehicle (unknown make) parked nearby,” she says. 
Police are now on the hunt for the gunmen and requested anyone with information to come forward. The Table View Neighbourhood Watch also requests anyone with cameras to check their footage to see whether a car can be identified.

The decomposing body of an unknown white man was found in a house in Moreleta Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said: “At 15:30 the police received a call from a concerned neighbour in Kariega Street in Moreleta Park.  According to the caller he did not see his neighbour for some time and the lights of the house remained on.”

Weilbach said that Garsfontein police and the fire brigade went to investigate the house.

Once inside, the police found the decomposing body of an unknown white man, suspected to be between 35 and 45 man in the kitchen.

One of the neighbours said that when paramedics entered the house, they found blood next to the man.

Weilbach said the police do not suspect foul play at this stage.

“An autopsy will be ordered to determine the cause of death,” said Weilbach.
