INVESTIGATIONS into the farm attacks that have afflicted a heart-broken community have recently led to several arrests.
In the case of the brutal double murder of Billy Van Rooyen and Ronnie Lombard in April, a total of five suspects have been arrested, including Bongani Miya, who hanged himself shortly after being detained by police earlier in May. Miya was the second suspect to be arrested.
Three more suspects, ranging in age from late twenties to early forties, have been arrested since and have each appeared in court briefly, pending their next court appearance, which will take place on June 6, along with that of their co-accused who was arrested first.
According to Captain Attie Engelbrecht, the investigating officer, further arrests are anticipated as the investigation continues.
Three people were arrested in Paulpietersburg in connection with the Lüneberg murder of 77-year- old Friedel Filter which took place on May 13.
Filter was attacked in his home and gunned down by an armed assailant. It is believed that the rest of the gang of farm attackers lay in wait outside while the murder took place. The alleged motive was robbery, but the perpetrators fled empty-handed. Filter’s Isuzu bakkie was stolen in the attack, but recovered shortly afterward.
A 20-year-old farm worker was wounded in the attack, shot twice in the leg by the fleeing assassins, and was taken to hospital. His condition, at this stage, is believed to be stable.
According to Captain Engelbrecht, further arrests are expected in this case as well and one of the attackers has been linked to another case of culpable homicide in the area. The three are due to appear in court on Monday, May 30.
The public is urged to continue to support and assist the police in bringing these killers to book and anyone who can assist with further information should contact Captain Attie Engelbrecht on 082 411 6769.
