The elderly farmer shot dead on Friday evening at his farm north of Luneberg has been named as 77-year-old Friedel Filter.

He was shot in the head on his farm Frischgewagt after at least two armed assailants entered his home.  Initial reports said there was a struggle and Mr Filter was shot dead in front of his daughter.

The attackers drove off in his Isuzu bakkie which has been recovered.  The attackers also shot a farm worker while making their get away.  They ran off when they abandoned the stolen bakkie.

Police and farm watch members are following up.
