Afrikaner Cornelia De Wet a victim of falsification and bearing the cost of over 40 court appearances has taken its toll on this once-strong woman

All Over for Cornelia De Wet | if found guilty, a 25-year jail term would be handed down 

It is all over for Cornelia De Wet, as the Carolina Magistrate court commenced with her trial this week in a case that has lingered on for over four years and consisted of over 40 court appearances. Arrested during 2011 and charged with possession of explosives and ammunition, the accused spent two years in different prisons and was released on bail. The stress and trauma of the past four years might be over, but the severity of the outcome will haunt the family for a long time.

Before the trial commenced, the accused was provided with a state attorney, who appeared for the first time and, according to De Wet, “was a gentleman, concerned and willing to try his best.” The accused was advised that if found guilty, a 25-year jail term would be handed down, but if De Wet pleaded guilty, the chance of a lesser sentence was on the table. Pleading guilty to avoid a harsh jail sentence, the accused received a five-year suspended sentence and a life-long criminal record.

During the trial, the state admitted that there was no real factual evidence to prove the accused was involved or had plans to commit a crime using the explosives or ammunition. The state confirmed that there were witnesses that could be called, but it would not result in any conclusive evidence being delivered. During sentencing, the magistrate said that the accused was the only person who knew what her intentions with the explosives and ammunition might have been. The state took into consideration the two years she had already spent in prison and the denial of bail on three accounts, including the attempt to make a plea bargain to end the traumatic experience. The accused was reminded of the seriousness of the charges and that the interests of the community and the family had to be taken into account before handing down the sentence.

De Wet is pleased not to have to return to prison, and recalled the nightmare of spending time in the overcrowded, rat-infested South African prisons. A particular memory that will haunt the accused is the rape affliction and being chained like an animal during the many transfers from one prison to the next. Not one prison experience was better than the rest, and places of safety were all described as close to being in hell; having to endure the wrath of prison wardens, who tormented and humiliated prisoners.

Behind the entire order was a right-wing group known as Leeuwag/Panzer, who, according to De Wet, are police informants. It is this group which fearfully tormented the family for years, and although the trial is over, the irritation continues. Shortly after the court case, a member of the Leeuwag group telephoned De Wet to say the members were disappointed with the sentence the accused had received. The caller said there were plans to continue the harassment and initiate action which would eventually cause the state to throw De Wet back into jail.

De Wet, a robust, intelligent person who was branded a political prisoner, endured years of suffering. Becoming a victim of falsification and bearing the cost of over 40 court appearances has taken its toll on this once-strong woman. Corruption and the failing justice system has sparked the fear of discrimination and inequity being directed towards the family. 

Now the first nightmare is over, and a new beginning awaits, yet it is a beginning with limits, as having a criminal record will cause financial hardship for De Wet, who will possibly not be employable.

n Edenvale resident is searching for her dog after her car was stolen with the dog inside yesterday afternoon.

A friend of the owner Ms Sue Mcnulty said that Ms Hosking is not doing too well after the incident as she has no family and only has Mirrie the Maltese as a companion.

“She took the dog to the park yesterday late afternoon as she does on a daily basis. After leaving the park she stopped to buy a few things at Van Riebeeck Mall. She left her window slightly open because her dog was with her. Ms Eunice’s car was stolen while she was inside and unfortunately Mirrie was in the vehicle,” said Ms Mcnulty.

She said that she met Ms Hosking in the hospital last year when she was hospitalised.

“Ms Hosking doesn’t have family and since I’ve met her I’ve felt responsible for her. She loves her dog dearly and wants him back,” she said. She said that the missing Maltese means everything to Ms Hosking.

The dog will respond to her name Mirrie and is easy to identify.

She is a small white Maltese and was recently groomed.

The EFF has again called for an excerpt of Die Stem (Afrikaans version) to be cut from the National Anthem.
In a statement to mark Heritage Day, the party’s national spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said Die Stem was a heritage of oppression and indignity.
“It is a song of oppressors, racists and mass murderers. Nkosi Sikelela must be sang in the same way as our people did when they were praying for a land free from oppression during colonial and apartheid years,” said Ndlozi.
“National anthems are songs of collective pride and we cannot be proud of the songs of mass murderous regimes,” said Ndlozi.
He said all colonial and apartheid symbols which still occupied places of prominence must also be removed.
This included the statue of Louis Botha and Queen Victoria in parliament.
In addition, one of the country’s biggest international tourist destination, the Kruger National Park, must be renamed.
This was because “Kruger was a colonial racist who engineered and presided over the Boer Republic that was a foundation for apartheid systems,” Ndlozi said.
“There must be no public celebration and valuation of racists who presided over the oppression and mass murder of the black majority. As of 2016, schools must offer an African language from Grade 1, Afrikaans doesn’t count

Angie Motshekga wants to force all schools that offer English and Afrikaans to add one African language to that as of Grade one.

According to Motshekga, who’s spent years getting to grips with what it is she’s really doing – she has yet to figure that one out – this is a very ‘exciting and important development’, but she also seems to have skipped the part where Afrikaans originated in South Africa.

“This means that schools that previously offered English and Afrikaans will now be mandated to offer African languages from Grade 1 and continue incrementally year-on-year.”

As with most of her decisions, it’s not clear as to what this will actually mean in terms of implementation, but we’re sure SADTU will have a strike or two to say about the matter, as it would be far too much work for teachers to – God forbid – offer learners more opportunities for academic development.

Now, while the benefits of learning more languages than one at a young age are numerous; South Africa is sitting with the lowest average score in basic mathematics and science, trailing most other African countries… perhaps priorities should be reshuffled a bit?

Only time will tell whether this new measure will distract the us long enough for Angie to make a clean getaway before we start actually looking at her less than basic performance as minister of basic education.

The nose of a bronze bust of Cecil John Rhodes at Rhodes Memorial was cut off with an angle grinder. The memorial, designed by Sir Herbert Baker, was unveiled on July 5, 1912. 

Cape Town - Police are still searching for whoever cut the nose off a bust of Cecil John Rhodes at Rhodes Memorial sometime between late Thursday and early Friday morning.

The damage to the large bronze bust of the former prime minister of the Cape Colony was discovered on Friday morning.

The culprits managed to completely cut off his nose, probably with an angle grinder, exposing a gash of bright untarnished bronze in the centre of his face.

Police spokeswoman Noloyiso Rwexana said a complaint of malicious damage to property and vandalism was lodged on Friday.

“(The) case is being investigated. No one has been arrested at this stage,” she said.

The vandals also painted anti-Rhodes graffiti on the bust’s pedestal and the granite walls of the memorial.

Despite attempts by SANparks officials to clean them off, the 30cm red letters were still faintly visible yesterday.

The message to the left of the bust read: 
“Your dreams of empire will die.”

To the right the vandals had written: “Racist, thief, murderer…” The last word is unclear.

Graffiti was also painted on the base of the pedestal, over a stanza from a poem by Rudyard Kipling. It was indecipherable except for the word “nose”

It also appears that the vandals attempted to cut off the whole head of the bust, but had to settle for just the nose.

A thin 10cm long cut on the back of the bust’s head was visible yesterday, stopping about a third of the way in.

The Tokolos Stencil Collective, a group of anonymous stencil and graffiti artists, tweeted on Friday that they had “received an anonymous e-mail from someone called “The Nose”, who had “claimed to have done something at Rhodes”.

The group later clarified that it was in no way involved, and didn't know the identity of the sender.

Residents of Mfuleni in Cape Town and the local Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) branch say they will continue to occupy vacant houses and land until they are allocated some.

The two groups invaded land at a new development last night.

The EFF says about 100 people are currently occupying ten houses and plots.

“There are about more than 200 plots here that have been here since last year but the ward councillor here doesn't supply, or doesn’t give these plots to the community members,” EFF spokesperson, Songeze Phahlindlela.

Phahlindlela adds community members “have decided that they must occupy them, because now they are renting as the backyarders from the plot owners, whereas there are free plots here.”

All hell broke loose near Princess Informal Settlement just past midnight this morning.

Two guards from Saraspace Security who where protecting a new overhauled substation alerted the owner of the company and a employee of Tshepisang Electric just past midnight that an illegal electricity connection was in progress. They rushed to the scene and the owner of Saraspace, Don van der Merwe, nearly lost control of his vehicle. Immediately the 15 plus black suspects opened fire on the two men and their two colleagues. A gun battle ensued in which Van der Merwe claims about 80 shots were exchanged. His bakkie was hit and the suspects fled. The security company, along with their dog Brutus, entered the camp but could not find the suspects.

Van der Merwe also claim that two police members, a male and female arrived on the scene while the shooting took place but the female officer was allegedly drunk. The SAPS members said they would return with back-up but by 4am they still did not.

#FarmMurder: Mike Danker found shot dead at his front door of his residence in Muldersdrift

Upon their arrival at the plot in Copperhouse Road on 12 September, police met up with the complainant who pointed out the body of a male who is believed to be between the ages of 65 and 70 years old.

The body was identified as well-known businessman Mike Danker, who is known within the catering industry.

It is believed that his body was discovered after a family member failed to get a hold of him on Saturday to notify him of the passing of his mother the previous night.

The victim had a gunshot wound in his upper body and was found lifeless in front of the open door of his residence.

“The Muldersdrift police are investigating a murder case until more information is available regarding the incident,” Muldersdrift police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Hitler Ngwenya, said.

ANOTHER #MURDER: 2 black killers arrested following the murder of Afrikaner woman 45 year-old Roseline Bosman of Humansdorp

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of 45 year-old Roseline Bosman of Humansdorp.

Provincial police commission, Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta has commended Humansdorp detectives for the swift arrests, following the discovery of Bosman's body by her children in her home on Saturday morning. 

Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei says Humansdorp detectives followed up on information which led them to Hankey where a 26 year-old suspect was arrested and found in possession of personal belongings of the deceased.

After the first suspect was arrested and questioned, a second man aged 49 was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning - also in Hankey.

Seekoei says the motive for the murder is not yet known and that more arrests are imminent.

#Murder Update: 4th black killer arrested in connection with the murder of 78-year-old Denise Marlene Webber

Port Elizabeth police have arrested a 4th black suspect  in connection with the murder of 78-year-old Denise Marlene Webber of Kabega Park.

Captain Johann Rheeder says the 28 year-old black suspect handed himself over to Kabega Park police on Friday in the company of his lawyer.

Rheeder says the black man had failed to appear in court earlier in the week and smart detective work by captain Fanus du Bruin and his team from Kabega Park police station ensured that the word on the street - that he was a marked man - got back to the suspect.

All four black attackers wanted in connection with Webber's murder at her home on the 20th of August are now behind bars.

Rheeder says the black suspect number four arrested on Friday will appear in court at St Albans on Monday.

His three alleged accomplices will appear again on the 16th of September for a bail application and the State is prepared to oppose bail.

Die aanvaller het vermoedelik toegang tot die perseel verkry deur kougom oor die hek se sensor te plaas om te verhoed dat dit toegaan. Hy het vermoedelik ʼn geruime tyd in die kompleks rondgeloop voordat hy gesien het hoe Kristy by die huis aankom en die geleentheid gebruik het om haar te oorval.

Volgens konstabel Noloyiso Rwexana, woordvoerder van die polisie, is ʼn 30-jarige verdagte in hegtenis geneem en sal op 22 September in die hof sal verskyn
