STATEMENT BY PORT SHEPSTONE SAPS:
On Friday morning just before 07:00, whilst major Gavin de Lange from the Ugu cluster, Vispol, was on his way to the office, he was flagged down by a group of people in Aiken Street.
They told him that a suspect was trying to rob a complainant. The complainant and major Nontisikello Mavundla, who was also standing off at the group of people, accompanied major De Lange in his police vehicle to search for the fleeing suspect.
As they were near the traffic intersection going towards the shopping centre, they saw the suspect and major De Lange stopped the vehicle. As he stopped the vehicle and got out to apprehend the suspect,
the suspect then immediately advanced towards the policeman with a knife and tried to stab him twice.
Major De Lange stepped back and drew his fire-arm. The suspect then, still advancing, physically attacked major De Lange, grabbing his firearm and managed to disarm the policeman. He hit major De Lange twice with the gun on his head and forehead and ran away.
Major De Lange jumped back in his car and chased after the suspect and caught up with him. He and major Mavundla managed to bring him down and arrested him. By then other policemen also arrived and rendered assistance.
The suspect (27) was taken into custody and Major de Lange was treated at the hospital for his injuries. He sustained a 7cm cut on top of his head and a 3cm one on his forehead and had to receive stitches.
Investigations are under way to establish if the suspect is wanted for other robbery cases in the CBD. He will also face an Attempted Murder charge.
Ugu SAPS cluster commander, major general Thembi Ndlovu, visited the injured policeman while he was being attended to in hospital. She warned criminals that there will be no mercy shown to anyone who attack policemen who are doing their duty.
