Pieter Barnard, 66, could possibly lose his foot after he was involved in a hit-and-run accident earlier this month.
Barnard seriously injured his foot in the accident on 14 November in Greenhills, Randfontein.
Since then, he was admitted to a local hospital in Krugersdorp for further medical treatment.
Barnard’s wife, Marie, told the News that her husband, who is very active, is extremely worried that he might lose his foot as it is not in good condition at the moment.
Days after the accident, a family member took to social media, to ask advise from the community with regards to possibly transferring Barnard to another hospital as they fear that he might lose his foot. In the post the family member claims that his foot is not properly taken care of and that it has not been cleaned since Barnard’s arrival at the hospital. The family was advised to transfer Barnard to another, possibly private, hospital.
On Wednesday, 18 November, Marie decided took a sneaky picture of the condition of his foot.
“Every time I get there, his foot is closed with a bandage, so I took a chance and opened it up to take a sneaky photo.”
Marie said her husband had to wait over 12 hours before his foot was stitched up the day after the accident.
She claims when she visited her husband on the Monday, he still had the same bloody bandage around his foot as the previous day.
“This foot is rotting and it stinks,” a doctor told Barnard.
He has been waiting for over a week to go to theater for an operation on his foot, but to now avail.
“Last week Pieter did not eat for two days, because he was supposed to go theater but it was postponed.”
