A mother’s tears fell onto the coffin of her 17-year-old son as it descended into the ground, his final resting place.
Her Keanu murdered, ripped away from her too soon.
His tragic murder on Thursday 27 August still fresh in her mind.
Keanu Jon Badenhorst, born on 27 February 1998 buried on Thursday 3 September 2015.
At the memorial service, led by pastor Manie Botha, at Leribisi Lodge, east of Pretoria, family and friends remembered the brave blue-eyed boy.
Then there was his sister, distraught and mourning gracefully.
“Keanu was not just my brother, he was a hero,” she wrote in a last farewell.
During proceedings, loved ones took turns to share their last memories of the young man who died apparently while trying to protect his mother, 41 and his 12-year-old sister.
Keanu died of a single gunshot to the stomach when he confronted robbers who had entered his home.
Although the family stood proud of their son’s heroic action, their tears of loss and hurt are still raw on their cheeks.
His words, written on a piece of paper the family found with a hand-drawn cross: “Always trust in Him for he guides you, He shows you the way. He carries you on his shoulders and picks you up again when you fall.”
