Four Black Mpumalanga Cops Caught Sleeping On Duty

Mpumalanga cops caught napping on duty

The person who took the picture, and asked not to be indentified,  said he spotted an idle vehicle at about 12.30am on August 28, Middleburg Observer reported.

He reportedly went outside and found a police vehicle with a person inside. After more than an hour, he decided to report the matter at the police station because the person in the vehicle did not hear him when he called out.

On arrival, the complainant could not find anyone to help him at the front desk and went to the radio control room to see if there was anybody there.

He reportedly found four police officers, three women and a man, all asleep.

The station’s communications officer Captain Khanyisile Zwane confirmed the incident and toldThe Citizen sleeping on duty as a police officer was an offence and punitive measures were in place to deal with it.

“Internal investigations have been conducted from today after the photos were submitted to management. The police officers will undergo a disciplinary hearing,” Zwane said.

She said this incident has dented the image of the SAPS.

“Given the crime rate we have in the province, community members will say the reason for the rise in crime is because police officers are sleeping on duty,” Zwane added.

The incident in Middelburg comes after KwaZulu-Natal police launched internal investigations after pictures of a police officer allegedly passed out behind the wheel of a police van, with a bottle of alcohol between his legs, were circulated on Facebook last month.

The officer, believed to be a constable from Mid-Illovo Police Station, trended on social media after Kokstad resident, Ben Heydenrych, took a photo of him sleeping in a police van with the bottle of alcohol on his lap in Scottsville.

In June, pictures of police officers allegedly sleeping while on duty went viral on social media.

Uploaded on to Facebook by Amoré Sameera Jooste, the images show the two officers seemingly in deep sleep in a Wierdabrug police van.

The men were parked outside a Pick n Pay Express shop at the BP petrol station in Eldoraigne, Centurion, south of Pretoria at about 4am, Jooste said.

Crime Line head Yusuf Abramjee also shared the images on his Facebook and said: “I have asked the Gauteng police commissioner to urgently investigate this and take the necessary action. I have also alerted the [Wierdabrug] station commander.” http://mpumalanganews.co.za/lnn/100412/mpumalanga-cops-caught-napping-on-duty
