Farmers should teach children how to act in farm attacks
A child was used by black attackers in a farm attack in George’s Valley, Limpopo this morning, to show them around the house, while his parents were held hostage. This was the third farm attack in 48 hours.
The suspects fled with the victims’ vehicle and were chased by farmers into Polokwane where the SAPS opened fire on them. The suspects however still managed to flee on foot.
“We call on everyone who stays in rural areas to talk to their children about farm attacks. We don’t want them to be scared, but they should know what to do in an attack,” Ian Cameron, Head of Community Safety at AfriForum said.
According to Cameron, black farm attackers don’t feel anything for their victims, therefore children should know exactly what to do to protect themselves and their loved-ones, as they’re easily used for negotiation purposes by attackers or used to escort attackers through the house, like in this case.
AfriForum is aware of 3 farm attacks in the country in the past 48 hours. The attack of the George’s Valley family as well as the following two:
- Mally Thomson was attacked by three suspects with a panga this morning. He shot one suspect dead. The other two fled. Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal.
- Jacobus Kemp shot at attackers with his shotgun on Sunday and killed one. Letsetele, Limpopo.
Taylor family unharmed after early morning attack

In yet another farm attack, two robbers gained access to a family home in George’s Valley during the early hours of Monday morning. It is believed that the suspects entered the home of the Taylor family through the kitchen window after having removed the burglar bars.
John and Ingrid Taylor were asleep in their bedroom when the suspects awoke them. One of the men pointed a gun at John’s head while the other wielded a knife. It was later discovered that the knife was taken from their kitchen.
“They were very young,” said Ingrid in reference to the assailants, “one boy looked to be around 17 and the other would not be more 23 years of age. They were very calm as they tied us up with cell phone charger cables and shoelaces and they spoke English too. They were very calm and quiet.”
Our eldest soon slept through the whole ordeal
The Taylors have two sons, one is still in school and the eldest matriculated last year. The boys were asleep at the time. Ingrid said that the suspects also tied up their youngest son, but not the eldest as they possibly never knew where his room was. “Our eldest son slept through the whole ordeal – thankfully they never woke him as he would have come to investigate and who knows what may have happened then.”
In the minutes that followed they ransacked the house, stealing all electronics and valuables including jewellery, two laptops, the family’s cell phones and the television. The suspects loaded their bait in the Taylors’ Volkswagen Passat but, at first, were unable start the vehicle to make their getaway. Unlike conventional motorcars, the Passat is equipped with a keycard and it would appear as though the suspects were unfamiliar with this technology.
“That’s when they came back into the house, untied our son and ordered him to assist them in starting the vehicle. They then sped off. My son came back into the house, grabbed the two-way radio and untied my husband and I. We immediately radioed for assistance over the George’s Valley Farmer’s Association Safety and Security network and all the farmers in the area responded.”
A high speed chase ensued between the members of the surrounding farms and SAPS officers as the suspects fled towards Haenertsburg. The farmers remained in radio contact with the police and together they managed to collaborate and execute a road block on the road just outside the entrance to Polokwane. According to eyewitnesses, an estimated 12 Polokwane SAPS officers were waiting for the vehicle and opened fire as they approached the city entrance. The suspects lost control of the vehicle and drove through a roadside wire fence before exiting the vehicle and fleeing on foot.
Because of the dense fog the suspects evaded arrest. According to the Polokwane SAPS, a statement will be issued on the incident. One of the farmers who participated in the chase supplied Bulletin with photographs of the scene. Bulletin will release further information as it becomes available.
We are relieved that none of us were hurt
The Taylor family expressed their thanks and appreciation to all members of the George’s Valley Farmer’s Association Safety and Security network as well as the members of the SAPS for their speedy response.
