Cape Town - A pathologist painted a grim picture of the last moments of a Klapmuts cop’s life when armed robbers raided the police station and shot him execution style.
One of the accused is a former colleague of murdered Warrant Officer Steven Britz.
According to Dr Deidre Abrahams, it appears as though Britz was made to lie down and as his left hand went to the back of his head to cover it from blows, two shots were fired at the back of his skull, one penetrating his hand and the other shot fired at close range.
Five men have been charged with the murder of Britz, who was found lying face down in a pool of blood at the Klapmuts Police Station in the early hours of April 17, 2014.
The 44-year-old was alone at the police station when armed robbers stormed the building, killed him and made off with guns.
A former officer at Klapmuts, Luvuyo Ndevu, alongside Anele Pantsi, Khayalethu Waka, Mlindi Mbaliso and Buhlali Phukwana face charges of murder, robbery and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Dr Abrahams said she was called to the scene to determine the time of death, which she put at 11.15pm.
Abrahams said: “The first shot [went] through his hand, exited and then re-entered the back of the head. This wound is not instantly fatal, there would be a lot of bleeding but the person might have survived for a little while.
“The second shot was fired execution style, the person would not have survived – rapid fatality.”
Abrahams said Britz had swelling on his left eye and on his nose, which indicates he was assaulted before he was shot.
The trial continues.
