Soldier found dead in home after home invasion
Benoni police spokesperson, Lieut Nomsa Sekele, said he was found with multiple stab wounds to his upper body and his hands had been tied behind his back.
She added there were no signs of forced entry at the home, in Cedar Street.
Bamberger was found at around 10.40am, on May 26.
“His friend was on his way to the house, to deliver something,” said Sekele.
“They spoke over the phone at 10.23am, then, after the friend arrived, he couldn’t reach the deceased via his phone again.
“He realised something was wrong and alerted the police.”
She added that, although the safe was opened, there were still two firearms in it and it was unclear whether anything had been taken by the murderer.
Bamberger’s daughter, Melissa Konig said, however, that a pistol, a semi-automatic LM4 rifle and a television set were gone.
She said he had licences for all four the firearms.
“It’s a big shock for us, you don’t expect something like this,” said Konig.
Bamberger’s son Darryl and Konig said their mother would arrive in Benoni on May 27, after which she will officially identify the body.
“She was in Knysna, because both her parents are in the hospital, but she is flying over tomorrow, on the first flight back,” Konig said.
Bamberger is survived by his wife, Leolene, his two children, Konig and Darryl, as well as three grandchildren, Erich (6) and Alexia Konig (4) and Ashleigh Bamberger (2).
Carel was a soldier at the Regiment East Rand, based in Benoni South.
The regiment is a reserve infantry battalion of the South African Army.
A case of house robbery and murder will be opened at the Benoni Police Station.
No arrests had been made at the time of publication.
