A MAN (23) appeared in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 11 April for attempted hijacking and attempted murder.
Chris Botha from Netcare 911, said paramedics received a call-out for a shooting outside the doctors’ rooms in Warwick Road, Pinetown.
“According to reports, a 74-year-old man was being pushed in a wheelchair to his vehicle by two women who are his family members. When they got to the vehicle, they were approached by unknown men with a gun. The elderly man was shot twice and critically injured.”
He said the paramedics found a doctor working on the man. The two women were not injured.
“The paramedics also treated the man on scene before taking him to hospital,” said Botha. A staff member at the doctor’s surgery confirmed the incident.
She said the shooting happened outside Dr Van Zyl’s offices at about 6pm.
“It was an attempted hijacking – the victim was coming from the airport with his family, his wife and daughter, who was the driver, three children, sister-in-law and her husband. Three men, one armed with a gun, approached them and shot the elderly man in the stomach.
“The security guard who witnessed the incident chased after and caught one of the men,” she said.
Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Lt Bongumusa Manqele, confirmed the incident and said one man was arrested and cases of attempted hijacking and attempted murder were opened.
