Video has emerged on social media showing a member of the public being manhandled by Johannesburg metro police officers.
The video of the excessive force being used - over a traffic violation - was filmed by a woman at the entrance to the Mall of Africa in Midrand earlier on Tuesday.
In the post that accompanied the video‚ Carmen Bell said that by the time she grabbed her phone out of her bag, the JMPD officers had “already punched‚ pushed and kicked this person to the floor”.
She said that one of the officers was kicking and hitting the man while he was on the ground.
The comment that accompanies the video also said the man was physically assaulted by the officers when he refused to be arrested for not having number plates on his vehicle.
In the video the man is seen saying that the JMPD is stealing his car when it appears that one of the officers is driving the car away‚ only to return it a few moments later when he is informed that the incident is being filmed‚ according to the woman who captured the incident.
A female officer tried to stop the woman from filming the incident.
JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said an investigation was under way but added that the department needed the man who was involved to come forward and make a statement.
Minnaar said such behaviour was unacceptable for trained officers.
Bell said in her Facebook post: "This poor man was SO frightened he could barely speak because he was ganged up on by three officers. The tall officer was blatant in his physical abuse and he is a shining example of the power trip that members of JMPD are on. It was disgusting and so scary to watch!"

More than 15-million black poor people get help from the government and from private charities in South Africa. But only very few charities dare to donate to help these Afrikaner squatters because of their fear of this law. Foreign charities and private donors are free to chose where they can send their money and their aid in South Africa This is a very desperate situation please help. We need assistance
