Bullying claims at Danville school

A 12-year-old boy has apparently been bullied at Laerskool Generaal Beyers in Danville to the extent that he needed 10 stitches to his fingers, hand and arm.

His father said a 13-year-old boy roughed up his son last Tuesday, resulting in severe injuries to his arm.

“I took him to hospital where he was treated. He needed 10 stitches,” he said.

“But the problem is that my son does not want to go to school anymore because he is afraid that he would be attacked again.”

When he went to the police to lay a charge he was told he could not do so.

“The police told me that I couldn’t open a case against a minor. I did not receive any help from the school either. They said children had fights at the school all the time.”

Another parent, Emerelda de Bruyn, said discipline in general, and bullying in particular were huge problems at the school.

She said: “My son can no longer participate in sport because of the injuries he sustained at the school as a result of a bullying incident last year.”

De Bruyn reported the bullying at the school and was asked to fill out a form. She has been waiting for feedback ever since.

De Bruyn, a member of the sector policing forum, said fights between school children were often broken up in the afternoons.

“If that happens again I will not hesitate to confront the school. I think this is a bad reflection on the school’s authorities who, seemingly, don’t have a proper handle on the children,” she said.
