QUICK thinking by a Scottburgh student probably saved her and her father’s lives.

Maddi Bamber, a Rhodes University student currently in her first year BSc (Zoology and Biochemistry), decided to make good use of ‘swot week’ and return home while lectures were suspended.

She left Grahamstown along with two friends from Pietermaritzburg in the early hours of Friday morning to avoid the protesting students.

“Because it was ‘swot week’, we had no lectures to attend, so we decided it would be better if we headed home to study. The university is very much in solidarity with the ‘fees must fall’ movement, thus all of the on-site learning facilities were closed,” she said.

Maddi phoned her father, Cliff Bamber, and asked him to meet them at Ixopo to bring her back to Scottburgh.

En route home, father and daughter saw a truck stopped in the middle of the road.

“As I overtook the truck, I noticed that the driver looked a little shaken up,” said Cliff. “At the time I did not realise that he had just been robbed.”

Then Cliff and Maddi noticed a silver Mercedes Benz with an ND registration parked on the left-hand side of the road.

Maddi said she just had this strange feeling and shouted: “Dad, dad… slow down. Dad, stop!”

They were about 25 metres away when the doors of the Mercedes were flung open. Four men armed with two pistols, an AK-47 and a rifle started rushing towards their vehicle.

Maddi shouted: “Dad, they’ve got guns!”

“I reversed for about 500 metres with the revs screaming in the red,” said Cliff.

“The four ran into0 the cane fields and I thought they were going to try and cut us off from the other side. Maddi kept shouting: ‘Go dad go!’

“I made a three-point-turn and we made our way back towards Ixopo. On the way we saw an oncoming police van which we waved down. We reported the incident to Constable Bongani Khuzwayo of the Durban SAPS Railway Unit Branch,” said Cliff.

Constable Khuzwayo escorted Cliff and Maddi back to Scottburgh.

Maddi and Cliff agreed they were lucky to be alive.
