At least two of the killers who escaped from the Dundee Prison on Saturday night were being held for the murder of brutal murders of Piet Marè and Venktas Govender in Dannhauser in September.

Mondli Gamede and  Bonginkosi Cyril Sithebe made a break for freedom after cutting a hole in the ceiling of their cell and managing, seemingly without detection, throw a jacket over the five-metre razor wire, and jump down into Grey Street.

The other men who escaped  included Cassim Alijan – who was being held for the murder in July of Rekha Govender in her Browning Street house, Lethukuthula Shabalala and Bongani Kubheka.

Police said the men are dangerous and should not be approached.  “Contact your nearest police station if you see these men,” a spokesman said.

Prominent Dannhauser resident, Colin Krause said the community is still reeling from the loss, and was now shocked that the men had escaped.

“People are living in fear and want the police to protect them.”

Unofficial sources told the Courier that a warder who was to have been on duty on Saturday night was ‘drunk at home’ at the time when the men escaped. Correctional Services have not commented on the allegation.
