A dramatic chase that included the use of a helicopter saw three suspected robbers being arrested in Garsfontein on Thursday.
Bull security spokesperson JP Griesel said he received a distress call in the afternoon from a man saying a friend’s daughter had called him to say robbers had burst into her house.
The girl was home alone at the time.
“We immediately informed police about the robbery, said Griesel.
Police said the three men stole a vehicle on Biddy Street and jewellery, a laptop and two television sets from the house.
It is unclear how the men gained entry but before fleeing, they grabbed the keys to the family’s red Mini Cooper parked outside.
Two of them fled in the stolen care while the third man drove away in the silver Chevrolet Aveo they had arrived in.
Security companies, Directorate of Specialized Security, Bull, ADT and members of the local CPF soon joined the police — who had summoned the assistance of a helicopter — in a pursuit.
In Solomon Mahlangu, a police officer spotted the Mini and maneuvered to block it.
Two men got out and started running but were arrested by the police.
The third robber, unaware of the arrest of the other two, drove into the heavy traffic in Solomon Mahlangu Drive about 30 minutes later and was also arrested.
Trauma support psychologist Debbie Henderson said it was unfortunate a little girl had to experience such an ordeal.
She said she would offer counselling to the family.
“I would like to assist the family through this difficult time,” Henderson said.
Police said the three men would be detained at the Garsfontein police station awaiting prosecution.
