The mystery of Lorraine Bothma's disappearance has finally been solved.

The mystery of Lorraine Bothma's disappearance has finally been solved.
The badly decomposed remains of a woman found in Pietermaritzburg have been positively identified as Toti’s Lorraine Bothma.

DNA tests revealed the body found on 5 April in an informal dump site in Market Street, Pietermaritzburg is that of the 45-year-old woman who had been missing since Monday, 30 March.

Mystery surrounded her disappearance for months, as her flat in Ross Street had no sign of forced entry and her vehicle was also missing.

Her killer has also been identified as 32-year-old Zama Francis Mkhize of Beach Road, who himself was recently murdered by his brother in Bulwer during an argument over a tractor.

Investigating officer, Lt Col Anton Booysen of the Durban Organised Crime Unit, who was tasked with assisting local detectives with the case, suspected Mkhize after he gave conflicting responses under interrogation.

“Mkhize worked part-time at Ollies, or as a car guard and car washer,” he said. He was the last person to be seen with her and he gave various stories regarding her disappearance.”

Lt Col Booysen confronted him with his and Lorraine’s cellphone records which proved the pair had travelled to Himeville, which Mkhize initially denied. Confronted with the evidence, he changed his story and said Lorraine had driven him to Himeville Arms for a job.

Blood was also found in Mkhize’s flat, which is still being investigated.

“I suspected it was Lorraine’s body that was found, but as her brother had cleaned out her flat, we had none of her DNA to compare. Her parents in Port Elizabeth donated their DNA for us to match.” Her mother’s DNA matched that of the body, but that is why it has taken more than five months to solve the mystery.

“On Wednesday, 16 September I went to search for Mkhize, only to find out he had been murdered by his brother, who is facing a murder charge.”

Investigations are still ongoing whether Mkhize had an accomplice. If an accomplice is found, they will be charged with Lorraine’s murder. If anyone has any information regarding the case, contact Lt Col Booysen on 082-567-4187.

Her vehicle, an orange Kia Picanto with registration number ND 637-359, has not been found.

She was seen leaving Ollies Restaurant on Sunday, 29 March at about 8.30pm.

Lt Col Booysen supects Lorraine was somehow lured into Mkhize’s flat, where she was stabbed. He then loaded her into her car and drove to Market Street, where he dumped her body. Her vehicle was spotted en route to Pietermaritzburg at about 4am on Monday, 30 March
