A woman’s peace of mind was also taken away from her when her home was invaded by robbers who stole her valuables.
“We were totally ambushed, I never saw it coming,” said the 74-year-old. Leigh, who lives in a secure townhouse complex, said she wants to alert other residents that living in a townhouse doesn’t mean that you are automatically safe and not prone to crime.
According to Leigh, the robbery occurred just after 11am. The gardener was outside doing his job and the female domestic worker was also busy with her duties inside the house when three robbers barged into her home. The robbers allegedly held the gardener at gunpoint and directed him inside the house where they tied him up together with the female domestic worker.
Leigh, on the other hand, was blindfolded and also had her hands tied. Bruises on her face proved her claim that she was assaulted by the robbers. “They started by closing my mouth so that I couldn’t scream, then they banged my head on the ground and also beat me several times on my body,” explained Leigh.
The robbers took all the jewellery that she had on, took an undisclosed amount of cash, several cellphones and other valuables in her home.
They then allegedly locked Leigh in the toilet and left with all of the keys they found in the house, including the car and house keys.
After realising that the robbers had left her home, she screamed for help. Neighbours came to their rescue and ADT and Parkview Police were called to the scene.
Although she received counselling, Leigh said she is still traumatised and feels that her peace of mind was also stolen from her. “I’m worried and ask myself if they will ever come back. I can’t sleep well at night and my health is deteriorating because of this.”
Looking at the whole ordeal, Leigh said she believes she became a crime victim as a result of someone’s negligence. “I suspect that someone didn’t ensure that the gate was completely closed before driving away.” She added that with the high walls and electric fence at their complex, robbers wouldn’t have jumped over the wall, given the time that the robbery occurred.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela confirmed that Parkview Police Detective Services were investigating a house robbery case and no suspects have been arrested yet.
