The tragedy of a recent double killing in Boschkop, east of Pretoria, was relived at the weekend, when the two victims were buried.
One of them, Gavin Wolfswinkel (32), was due to get married within three weeks. He and his his employee Lucky Sithome were shot dead in an apparent robbery on 15 November.
Their families said they had been devastated by the sad and senseless killing of the two men.
Wolfswinkel was buried in Elarduspark, east of Pretoria, on Friday afternoon, and Sithome at his home near Middelburg, Mpumalanga, on Saturday.
Wolfswinkel’s fiancée Nadia Treeby said the loss of Wolfswinkel had been hard to bear.
Sithome’s brother Wonder Sithome said his brother’s death was a bitter pill to swallow.
“He was a very good man. There was a lot of people at his funeral,” said Sithome.
“The entire family is mourning his death.”
Treeby said Wolfswinkel’s funeral at the Collage community church in Elarduspark was extremely emotional.
“This is an extremely difficult time, but I am trying to stand strong,” she said.
“Gavin was such a kind man. It was difficult for everyone to say goodbye to him.”
Nadia’s father Tom said she had since moved in with him.
“Gavin’s death has been hard on us all. You never think that something like this will ever happen to you,” said Tom.
“At the moment my only concern is my daughter. I know she will never fully recover from this, but we are doing everything we can to support her. Our well-being comes second to hers.”
Wolfswinkel’s family described him as a deeply caring man who loved animals.
Both murder victims worked in the construction industry. The killers gained entry to the small-holding by cutting through a wire fence around the property
.When Sithome and Wolfswinkel responded to the alarm, they were shot and killed. No one else was hurt.
A photo of the murder scene posted on Facebook by a neighbour quickly went viral. It was removed several hours later at Tom’s insistence.
