Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of an elderly man in Sophiatown.
A 71-year-old man was stabbed twice and killed at his home around 3am on 30 September. Three suspects allegedly entered the home of the elderly couple. They took jewellery and electronics. During the robbery the man was stabbed and his wife (73) was throttled.
She has since been treated at the Netcare Garden City Hospital and is recovering.
Sophiatown SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn confirmed that three suspects were arrested later that day. “Although they have been arrested in connection with the robbery and murder, they have not yet been charged as we are still investigating.”
Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Dauw Steyn said, “We are very happy that SAPS acted so swiftly. We are hoping if these suspects are guilty that they do not get bail and are prosecuted.”
This is the second reported murder due to stabbing in Sophiatown in September. A man was stabbed several times on Sol Street on 14 September, and died afterwards.
Also, a man was shot eight times and died at Westpark Cemetery while mourning at his mother’s grave on 26 September. http://northcliffmelvilletimes.co.za/208933/update-3-suspects-arrested-for-elderly-mans-murder/
