Clashes between Siyanynzela land invaders and law enforcement continues in Grabouw in the Western Cape. About 50 new shacks have been demolished on a piece of land next to the N2 since Tuesday
THEEWATERSKLOOF Municipality has described the illegal invasion of land that belongs to Public Works as prompting chaos which threatens sustainable government in the area.
The police presence in Grabouw was increased yesterday, with more than 40 police vans, three inyalas and a large contingent of cops sent in.
Municipal manager Stanley Wallace said he fully understands that people are desperate to find a place to call home.
“The reality is that an illegal land invasion took place. Invasions of this nature cause total anarchy and chaos and will ultimately make this municipality and its area ungovernable,” he said.
Wallace said the land invasion was like the establishment of an additional town in the area which all of sudden needed to be provided with infrastructure and services.
He said they fully support Public Works and the police for taking a strong position against the illegal land invasion.
Municipal spokesman Hugo Geldenhuys estimated the damage to be more than R2 million. Western Cape police spokeswoman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said 13 suspects aged between 18 and 45 were arrested and charged with public violence and possession of stolen property.
