A man has been charged with attempted murder after he shot a robber in Meyerspark.
The man who shot a robber multiple times in Meyerspark at the weekend has been charged with attempted murder, said Silverton policespokesperson Captain Jan Sepato.
Three robbers were seen fiddling with a door at a house in a complex on the corner of Simon Vermooten and Bush roads on Saturday night.
The homeowner was in the house with children, said Sepato.
“A neighbour saw the men going in through the window with a firearm. The children then locked themselves in a room,” he said.
He said the men came out with a plasma TV. The neighbour spotted and followed them.
“One of the suspects took out a firearm and fired shots at the neighbour. Luckily, he [the neighbour] was not struck by a bullet,” said Sepato.
He said the neighbour, who was also armed, returned fire and shot the robber several times in the upper body.
“Paramedics were called and the suspect was taken to hospital under police guard.”
Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the robber was believed to be in his twenties.
“Paramedics managed to stabilise the injured man before transporting him to a nearby hospital,” said Mathe.
Sepato said the robber’s two accomplices fled the scene, but the plasma TV was recovered.
He said the neighbour was charged with attempted murder but has not been arrested yet.
“The matter will be taken to court for the prosecutor to decide. The suspect faces charges of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and housebreaking.”
