War wounds: Johan Greyling* was stabbed eight times while fighting off his attackers near Farmers Hall last week.

Fight-or-flight; a physiological reaction to a perceived threat to one’s survival.

The adrenaline pulsing through his veins, Johan Greyling* decided to fight.

Trekking through the veld between Farmers Hall and the Oval Track, the 43-year-old would never had predicted what would transpire over the next few minutes.

“I was walking home at 2.30pm last Tuesday,” he explained. “I took a shortcut through the veld because it was hot.”

Two men soon allegedly approached Johan and began roughing him up.

“One of the men had a knife. When he told me he was going to kill me, I decided to fight back. I couldn’t just stand there; I have a wife and two children to think about.”

Inflicting near-fatal blows with a compact pocket knife, Johan recalled how the brazen bandit stabbed him repeatedly.

Amid the commotion, the perpetrators managed to get their hands on his cellphone.

“They asked for money, but I didn’t have any on me. That’s when they ran away.”

Johan said he was fortunate in a sense, as two bystanders reportedly witnessed the brutal attack.

Once the suspects had fled the scene, and his guardian angels rushed to his side, where they waited with him until paramedics and police arrived.

Drenched in blood, Johan was later transported to Madadeni Provincial Hospital for further treatment. A total of 38 stitches were inserted into the eight stab wounds to his face, head, hands, neck and rib cage.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Johan said he didn’t feel a thing when the blade tore swiftly through his skin.

“I was fighting to stay alive. At that stage, I didn’t feel any pain.”

Although Johan considers himself lucky to have survived the ordeal, he warned residents to avoid the area where the incident occurred at all costs.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, criminals are attacking people there to steal items that can be resold. It’s a reality; don’t take shortcuts.”

While Johan recovers in the comfort of his home, the incident remains the subject of police investigations.

He expressed his heartfelt thanks to the bystanders who came to his aid after the savage attack.

“If it were not for them, I probably wouldn’t be here today,” Johan concluded.
