#FarmAttack X3: Three families attacked, man critically injured by armed black attackers in De Wildt

Armed robbers went on the rampage in De Wildt on Thursday night attacking three families and critically injuring a man when he was shot through the chest.

Two armed robbers first struck at the house of a couple in their eighties on Silkaatsnek. Chris and Eileen Els woke up around 23:30 from a noise and a dog barking outside their house. Chris went to look out the kitchen window and was surprised by an armed robber pointing a handgun at him through the window.

“He put his hands in the air and told the robber he would open the door but instead hid behind the fridge. He then heard another robber trying to get in the bathroom window. He luckily had a spade in the kitchen and started hitting it against the wall to make a noise,” a neighbour told the Kormorant.

His wife in the meantime sent a sms to the neighbours who fired warning shots. The robbers fled.

About an hour later two armed robbers forced open the door to a farm workers’ house two kilometres away, held a man and his wife at gunpoint and robbed them of their cellphones. They demanded money which the couple did not have and then fled.

On their way they encountered a neighbouring resident, Carel van der Merwe (48) who was on his way home after he had assisted another neighbour in closing up a restaurant. They shot him through the neck and the bullet penetrated his chest and lung before lodging in his rib.

“Carel was on foot after he helped close up the restaurant a couple of hundred meters from his property. He walked into the two armed robbers who grabbed him and put a gun between his eyes. The robber pulled the trigger but the handgun did not fire,” his sister Rensia van Wyk told the Kormorant.

“Carel slapped the gun from the robber’s hand but the second robber shot him from behind. They fled.”

Carel is in a serious but stable condition in the ICU in the Montana Hospital. “The doctors do not want to operate as it is too risky at the moment,” Rensia said.

No one has been arrested yet and the Mmakau police are looking for the robbers.
