#BlackViolenceContinuesInSA: MMC’s ‘bodyguards’ face assault charges

The victim was trying to record a video during a “chaotic” regional ANC meeting

Two men believed to be bodyguards of Tshwane MMC for Transport George Matjila are being investigated after allegedly assaulting a 44-year-old Soshanguve man during a so-called chaotic ANC meeting in Winterveldt on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi confirmed police were investigating a case of assault with the intent of causing grievous bodily harm against the MMC’s two bodyguards.

Moremi said the victim, Amos Mkhatshwa, who was also a member of the ANC, was trying to record a video during a “chaotic” regional ANC meeting, Rekord East reported.

“The two bodyguards walked up to him and ordered him to stop taking a video. He told them he was also an ANC member and had the right to take the video. The two men manhandled him and started assaulting him with bottles and stones,” added Moremi.

Mkhatshwa sustained serious injuries.

The meeting where the chaos broke out was held at the Multi-Purpose Centre in Soshanguve.

Matjila was sent out by the ANC to oversee this branch meeting which degenerated into chaos, according to those present. Witnesses said the meeting was disrupted by bouncers who arrived and stood at the back.

However, Matjila has denied that he had a confrontation with another ANC member at the meeting and also denied allegations that he ordered the two men to disrupt the meeting.

“Those men were bouncers, I never ordered them to assault anyone. I am an ANC leader, I do not work with bouncers. They are not my bodyguards,” Matjila said.

Police said no arrests had been made

A fault on the network led to four panels and a transformer to start burning.

Parts of Benoni on the East Rand remain without electricity after four mini substations in the Crystal Park and Rynfield areas were set ablaze as a result of a fire at the main substation along Pretoria Road this morning.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson Themba Gadebe said a fault on the network led to four panels and a transformer at the Rynfield 132kV substation, bursting into flames at around 5am, Benoni City Times reported.
“The Eskom Benburg substation, which supplies northern parts of Benoni, parts of Kempton Park and Daveyton, also tripped. Power to areas supplied by this substation will, however, be restored,” added Gadebe.
A new transformer will be brought in to replace the one damaged in a fire.
“Our team is currently clearing the smoke and cooling the damaged equipment before technicians can do a proper assessment of the damage and investigate the cause,” Gadebe added.
Gadebe could not say when electricity would be restored to affected areas.
Affected areas include: Ebotse, Morehill, Northmead, Crystal Park, Putfontein, Brentwood Park, Fairleads, Benoni Agricultural Holdings and parts of Daveyton.
In a separate incident, a transmitter exploded at about 7pm, causing a fire at a part of the substationin Steelpoort, Limpopo in November last year.
The Eskom employees at the scene were unable to specify the reason for the transmitter exploding.

STEELPOORT - At 19:00 on Sunday night one of the Eskom Merensky Substation transmitters exploded causing a part of the station to erupt into flames.
The Eskom employees at scene were unable to specify the reason for the transmitter exploding. The Tubatse Fire Department and mine rescue team were at the scene to control the fire.
Entry to the substation was denied due to safety precautions. No injuries were reported. At 21:00 the fire was still ongoing and another fire truck arrived at the scene. During the fire the town was still fully supplied with electricity. The blaze was only extinguished at 02:30 the next morning.
