JOHANNESBURG - Police are searching for five suspects involved in a shooting on the N3 highway, in which a father and son were wounded.
While the motive for the shooting is still unknown, eyewitnesses claim the gunmen opened fire on the pair with AK47’s earlier today.
The assailants are said to have concealed their identity by wearing balaclavas.
The police’s Lungelo Dlamini says a substantial amount of money was taken from the car.
“Police are investigating an incident of shooting on the N3 north, near the Buccleuch interchange. It is alleged that group of five people travelling in a white Audi attacked a father and his son who were driving a Mercedes Benz. Their vehicle was shot at and a substantial amount of money was removed from the vehicle.”
As police wrap up investigations on the highway, spokesperson Moses Maphakela has confirmed the father and son were on their way to Pretoria when their car was shot at.
“This afternoon, at around 12:30pm, the complainants were approached by suspects driving a [white Audi] A3. They started to shoot the complainant.”
Meanwhile, the father and son are still recovering in a nearby hospital.
While their conditions are not yet known, a case of robbery and attempted murder has been opened.
Traffic on the highway is slowly returning to normal with only one lane still partially closed off.
