Pietermaritzburg - Police are on the hunt for a brazen gang of armed robbers terrorising Killarney Valley residents.
The Witness knows of three homes that were targeted last week in the quiet farming area near Camperdown but residents say there are many more.
It is believed a single gang of three or four men is behind the spate of armed robberies as a similar modus operandi has been noticed by police.
Killarney Valley resident Brendan Reynolds yesterday relived the traumatic ordeal he, his wife Monique and children went through last Monday evening.
Reynolds said his family were asleep when two men broke down the front door.
One of the men grabbed Monique while the other attacked him with a cricket bat, pounding his legs and back.
The man then took out a gun and held it to Reynolds’s head while the other pulled Monique from room to room making her point out where the valuables were kept.
The men made off on foot with laptops, cellphones and other valuables.
The ordeal lasted about 15 minutes but yesterday, a week after the incident, large purple bruises could still be seen on Reynolds’s legs and back.
Another resident, who asked to remain unnamed, said two men also attempted to break into her parents’ house, which is next to her own, last Friday night.
The woman said the men managed to bypass the exterior beams and came up to the front door when the dogs inside the house started to bark, alerting her parents.
The men allegedly tried to break through the door with a wheel spanner but were scared off when the woman’s father fired off a gunshot.
“The two men could very possibly be the same men who attacked Brendan and his family. On the same night, intruders were spotted at a nearby ranch, then the incident happened on our property, and then a couple down the valley were also attacked,” the woman said.
It is believed the family attacked after the incident at the woman’s premises were also held at gunpoint and pistol whipped.
KZN police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said Camperdown police are investigating two cases of house robbery.
“It is alleged that the victims were attacked by the suspects when they were sleeping in their homes. The suspects assaulted the victims and demanded cash as well as valuable items. No arrest has been made at this stage,” Zwane said. https://facebook.com/boerekrisisaksie/photos/a.178568022169751.48293.116298045063416/1295792983780577/?type=3&fs=0
