Fire destroys Cape Town trains

CAPE TOWN – Western Cape Metrorail reported this morning that four motor coaches and six carriages destroyed in a fire in the early hours of Tuesday.
In a statement, Metrorail said: “The trains were stabled at the Cape Town station next to each other on platforms 9 and 10 respectively when the fire started shortly before 2am this morning.”
The statement said in this year alone 20 carriages were destroyed in fires, setting back their recovery programme.
“This sets back our recovery programme by months and further depletes much-needed capacity for the rail to meet customer demands,” read the statement.
City of Cape Town spokesperson JP Smith said: “It is unlikely that this was an electric fault as that would have only affected one carriage. This is most likely arson.”
Metrorail said commuters can expect delays of 40 to 60 minutes.
They have also advised pupils writing exams to use alternative transport.
No injuries have been reported and police are following several leads in their investigation.

Cape Town - Several trains have been cancelled and Metrorail has warned of delays after four motor coaches and six plain trailers were destroyed by fire early on Tuesday.

The train-sets were stabled at Cape Town station next to each other on platforms 9 and 10 respectively when the fire started shortly before 2am on Tuesday morning, Metrorail said.

Surveying the extent of the damage on Tuesday morning, regional manager Richard Walker condemned the “latest blatant attack on Metrorail”.
“This sets back our recovery programme by months and further depletes much-needed capacity for rail to meet customer demand, Walker said.
Platforms 8 to 11 at Cape Town station have been closed and trains are expected to be delayed by more than 60 minutes, Metrorail said. http://mobi.iol.co.za/#!/article/train-delays-after-fire-at-cape-station-1.1932606
