Pit bull terrier protects family during robbery
A Black attacker was arrested at The Reeds on Friday morning after he was attacked by a pit bull terrier.
Resident and owner of the three pit bull terriers, Billy Macleod told Rekord about the life-threatening ordeal on Friday morning.
“I remember my wife’s voice saying it was 04:50, while I was repairing one of the bikes I service,” said Macloed.
As I looked up, to my surprise there was a man in the yard. He hadn’t seen me.
I yelled and chased him to the front yard gate when my dog followed.
Macloed said the man stopped mid-way as though attempting to fight him.
“What people do not know is that we have specially trained our babies (dogs) to follow commands. After signalling her to attack she took hold of the man to bring him to the ground as he was about to jump the fence.
“We brought him down and pinned him to the ground. My dog had taken hold of his leg and he was frantically trying to escape.
“Our other dog joined the commotion and also latched onto the man as she was trained to do on command,” Macloed said.
“My wife arrived on the scene in a frenzy and I told her to fetch the choker chains for me to restrain the dogs.
“As I attempted to remove the first one it nipped my finger in the heat of the moment.
“Nowhere did anyone lose a finger,” he said.
After Macloed had removed the dogs the intruder attempted to flee again when he pierced his hand on the top palisade fence trying to jump the fence. The robber also sustained other injuries getting over the fence.
Macloed said at that point the neighbours had heard the commotion and came out to see what was happening.
One of the neighbours hit a panic button and a security firm soon arrived on the scene.
Macloed said: “As the man was on top of the fence, trying to jump the fence, one of the neighbours got hold of him and pulled him down to the outside of the property.”
“He was held there and I asked him what he was doing in my yard. The intruder said he was never in my yard, but to my surprise, my laptop which I had left in my office which is situated right next to my house was perfectly placed outside our fence, meaning the man had come inside, took my laptop, and was attempting to steal something else.”
Macleod said it was disturbing to know the intruder was standing a few meters from where his wife had been moments earlier.
“That is the scary part,” he said.
“My babies (three pit bulls) are well-trained and are not ‘man aggressive dogs’ or ‘people violent’, as you can see for yourself,” he told Rekord.
“We opened a case of business robbery at the Wierdabrug police station,” said Macloed.
Wierdabrug spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma said according to a police report the intruder was trying to flee with a laptop.
She said: “A case of burglary has been opened at Wierdabrug police station and the man is still under police guard at a local hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries sustained on Friday morning.” http://rekordcenturion.co.za/62131/pit-bull-terrier-protects-family-during-robbery/
