Breaking news: Thornville farmer murdered in brutal attack
Thornville farmer Edwin Mapstone and his wife Jean were attacked during the early hours of Friday morning at their Glower Oer Farm.
It is believed that the couple awoke to attackers in their bedroom at about 2am. . While 53-year-old Edwin was shot and killed in a scuffle, Jean, who was stabbed, managed to escape. She is recovering at a local hospital having sustained multiple stab wounds.
Firearms and ammunition were stolen.
Shaheen Suleiman of Magma Security said they were currently working with the SAPS to trace suspects and were confident of arrests.
“It appears to be a forced entry as many doors and windows are broken at the scene. It is believed that the farmer got into a struggle with the robbers before he was shot,”said Suleiman.
KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union, Kwanalu, condemned the attacked.
“Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends of Edwin and Jean,” said Kwanalu CEO, Sandy La Marque.
“We are highly concerned about the senseless violence of this attack and call for justice to be served,” she said.
Kwanalu said the impact of an act of this nature, not only has a devastating effect on family and friends but also on the entire South African farming community.
“An incident of this nature is a harsh reminder of the reality of our times. We cannot stress enough, to our farmers, the importance of staying vigilant and ensuring all possible security measures are in place,” La Marque said.
Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said charges of murder and attempted murder are being investigated.
He appealed to anyone with information on the attack to contact the local police station or Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.

Dagga can be used in the home, Western Cape High Court rules
Cape Town – The Western Cape High Court has made a landmark ruling, declaring that it is an infringement to ban the use of dagga by adults in private homes.
In making the ruling on Friday, it has allowed for the possession, cultivation and use dagga at home, for private use.
It has also ruled that Parliament must change sections of the Drug Trafficking Act, as well as the Medicines Control Act.
It has 24 months to do so.
The successful application to decriminalise dagga was driven by Dagga Party leader Jeremy Acton and Rastafarian Garreth Prince who argued on December 13 and 14 last year for the decriminalisation of the herb.
Acton, Prince, and 18 plaintiffs applied to the court for the Criminal Prohibition of Dagga Act (sections 4b and 5c), read with certain sections of Part III of Schedule 2 of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act, to be declared unconstitutional.
Those sections make it a crime to possess a drug, unless it is for a variety of medical reasons. The Drugs and Trafficking Act defines what constitutes a drug.
They are also challenging the Medicines and Related Substances Act.
They submitted that the laws prohibiting dagga use are unfair, discriminatory, outdated, and applied disproportionately to black users.
The two have been helping people arrested for possession of dagga by obtaining a stay of prosecution, pending the outcome of their application.
Prince was arrested for possession of dagga in 1989, while a law student at the University of the Western Cape.
He paid a R60 fine and thought that was the end of it. When he graduated and applied to the Cape Bar to be admitted as an attorney, he was rejected because of the dagga conviction, and because he refused to apologise for it.
To Prince, using dagga was a religious choice as a Rastafarian. He unsuccessfully brought an application to the Constitutional Court to have it decriminalised for religious purposes.
He became a community legal adviser, but was arrested again in 2012 for growing dagga in his garden in Kraaifontein.

Dictionary of Bible Themes Scripture:
8292 LOVE
A caring commitment, in which affection and delight are shown to others, which is grounded in the nature of God himself. In his words and actions, and supremely in the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, God demonstrates the nature of love and defines the direction in which human love in all its forms should develop.
This set of themes consists of the following:
Love will be the standard that all mankind will be judged, for that is the law that sets us free. Jam. 2:12.
If we love one another, God lives in us and His love is perfected in us.
