South Africa has been named the worst country in the world in which to raise school-going children aged between five and 14. (but these statistics also include INFANTICIDES...)
A shocking 77 South African children die out of every 100 000 – the highest in the world.
This was revealed by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) in a two-day conference on education organised by the Global Development Network in Lima, Peru, last week, which Weekend Post’s sister newspaper, the Daily Dispatch, attended.
In her presentation, Unicef’s education emergency officer for Latin America and the Caribbean, Ruth Custode, said violence was jeopardising the right to education for millions of children around the world.
Custode said South Africa had a high number of homicide incidents where schoolchildren were victims.
She revealed that:
-- The 76.94 out of 100,000 schoolchildren who died in South Africa was far higher than in Congo and Somalia, which are at 12 and eight deaths per 100 000 respectively;
More South African schoolchildren died than anywhere else in the world, with 76.94 deaths per 100 000, compared with the UK which was at 8.92 and the US at 12.97. These figures included infanticide; and
South Africa was ranked second-highest for small arms possession, higher than the US and UK.On violent crimes, South Africa was at the top.She said it was important to build strong, well-educated communities.
“The private sector can play a critical role in achieving strong schools and communities by engaging with local authorities, organisations and society to raise awareness and identify good practices to prevent violence and ensure the right to education in their communities,” she said.
Violence was badly affecting education. “You will see that there are a lot of dropouts at school because of threats and fear.”
Many children faced restrictions in getting to school. Some had to take dangerous routes or were forcefully recruited into criminal activities.
She said strong school and community initiatives had to bring together schools, the authorities, youth, communities and the private sectors.
“School and community-based intervention with local authority-based intervention are very important.”

A 7-yo Afrikaans girl and her gran were both injured in assaults with metal bars by two blacks who broke in to the grandmother's home while the girl was at her grandmother's house:

The little girl's mother Nadia Smit Lottering, said her daughter was staying with her grandmother because of the school-vacation day.
They were sitting in the living room around 3pm when two blacks climbed through the rear window, assaulted the grandmother with an iron bar - and when the little girl
started crying and calling for her grandmother, one of the black men pushed the little girl down on the couch and beat her. During the attack the grandmother
passed out. When she came to the 'men' had disappeared by three rings and a watch. Apparently they also scratched in her cupboards but nothing else appears missing.
Her mother-in-law had hidden her cellphones inside her underwear and was unable to phone her, said Mrs Lottering.
"My daughter has a bump on her head and marks where the steel-bar had bruised and cut her.
My mother in law has at least four head-wounds and one eye is injured, she has a bad cut to her hand and a light concussion, said Mrs Lottering.

Nylstroom Regional Court trial starts for five Zimbabwean asylum-seekers today - charged with murdering Afrikaner smallholder Jakes van Deventer in his sleep in March 2015 near Warmbaths next to his sleeping baby-son, (3 months old). (Also: a knife was held to the baby's cheek with the threat that he would be murdered too. The wife/partner Moniquefought back fiercely to protect her baby and injured two fingers- nearly severed.) There were three children in the house.
The murdered man's friend, Barend Pienaar, wrote on his FB page 7 March 2016: (we translated the quote from the original Afrikaans) --
Pienaar: Quote: "The trial of five black terrorists starts in Nylstroom regional court today. They are on trial for killing my friend Jakes Van Deventer -- murdered in March 2015 while asleep in his house in Warmbaths: May justice be done. Jakes van Deventer we miss you. Details of murder:
Originally, six black male asylumseekers from Zimbabwe appeared in the Warmbaths magistrate's court for the murder of Afrikaner smallholder Jakes van Deventer and the attack on his wife Monique. Their self-claimed 'gang-leader' admitted in testimony in the magistrate's court that the Zimbabwean group had "formed attack gangs for the specific purpose of terrorising, attacking, raping and murdering whites in Rustenburg/Brits/Warmbaths area"..

The men attacked Van Deventer and his partner, stabbing her and holding a knife against their baby's cheek. She fought back, severely injuring two fingers, according to the report.

1 Dec 2010: Lindley, Free State, South Africa: Potgieter Free State Farm Couple tortured to death, baby Willemien, 3, executed with headshot: The white Afrikaner farm couple Attie and Wilna Potgieter and daughter Willemien were attacked by a gang of 6 blacks, ambushed when he arrived home. He was chopped in the back of the head with a machete, stabbed with a garden fork - sustaining 151 wounds from which he dies. His wife Wilna is executed with a headshot. Baby Willemien, 3, was picked up by her red hair, a shot was fired through her head execution-style. The gang takes the time to leave a note on a cardboard notice to the farm gate, writing in Sotho:
'We willed them, we're coming back.' They showed no remorse during their trial. ANC-members were dancing and singing outside the courtroom in their defense.

Durban – A three-and-a-half year old girl is undergoing trauma counselling after she was punched and pushed during a home robbery in Shongweni. Her father Jamie Visagie said after their ordeal: "“They called me white trash and spoke in racial undertones. I was threatened with death numerous times...”
Careline volunteers will treat the child and her father after the attack left the tot with a blue mark and swelling.Jamie Visagie and little Enya were waiting in their Shongweni home for her mother, Cathy Rees, to return on Tuesday.Visagie heard a noise in their driveway and, thinking it was Rees, opened the front door. Four men rushed in, slapped the spectacles off his face and held a gun to his head.“Enya and I were shoved around. They wrapped a towel around my head so I could not see their faces. They threw us down on the double bed in the room.
“Enya was crying, so they threatened to kill her. They pulled me into the other room to open the safe. I unlocked the safe. They tied me up with ski ropes and telephone cords,” Visagie said.
Visagie wanted it all to end so he could get to his daughter.The little girl went silent for the 15 minutes they had him tied up.“I realised the more I fought for Enya, the more harm they were going to do us. As soon as they left, I undid the knots and ran to the room where I last saw her. She was under a blanket. Enya said the guy had punched her,” Visagie said.
Rees said Enya was left with a blue mark and swelling behind her right ear and had received medical attention. Doctors are monitoring the injury.
“We are not sure if she was hit unconscious and if the robber covered her up with a blanket. We only discovered she had been injured when police and family arrived later and Enya complained her head was sore,” Rees said.Mom Rees said she had not slept since the ordeal.“They called me white trash and spoke in racial undertones. I was threatened with death numerous times,” Visagie said.Private Security Company Secure Link spokesman, Steven King, said the men took appliances, alcohol and food.Police Major Thulani Zwane said Visagie was threatened with a knife and firearm.“They ransacked the house and loaded the goods in Visagie’s Opel Corsa bakkie before fleeing the scene,” Zwane said.A case of house robbery but not of crimen injuria for the racist hatespeech against the young father, has been opened at Hillcrest police station. 3 Junie 2013 The young accused triple-murderers of Chinese baby girl Xiao-Nan Chen, 18 months, and her parents Long Liang 31, and Li-ping 24 in their 'Konka Stores' shopin Warden, Free State: appeared
in Harrismith, Free State magistrate's court on the first day of their trial. In front of them on the evidence table: a hatchet and two long knives displayed in front of
judge Corné van Zyl. The State evidence in the documents maintains that it's with these two pangas (cane-knives) and the hatchet with which 18month-old Chinese baby Xiao-Nan and her parents Long Liang 31 and Li-ping 24, were slaughtered at their shop, Konka Stores.
The gruesome murder scene showed that all three had their skulls had been slashed with the sharp knives.
The sister had to force a lock to the shop to get in - and found her brother's body
in a puddle of blood - still clutching his keys. The wife and baby-daughter were discovered next.
All three hacked to death. The triple-murder had shocked 'even the most hardened police officers,' reported Volksblad daily Afrikaans newspaper.
The couple which lived at the shop in Warden Free State, were hacked to death on 16 September 2012.
Long Liang's sister found the bodies - and the couple's three-year-old son was the only survivor. The child was found weeping and confused inside the blood-smeared shop.
None of the Chinese relatives were at the first court appearance of the accused.
On trial are Scelo Ndaba 21 of Ezenzeleni, Warden - whose pro-rata legal counsel is prof Carel Fick; Dumisani Selepe, 18, represented to Dawie Reyneke, and Mbongeni Tiki, 21 represented by pro-rata defence counsel adv Belinda Daffue.
State-advocate Johan de Nyschen stated in front of judge Van Zyl that " Tiki 's footprint and Ndaba's DNA are linked to the crime scene', and the charge sheet also noted that Selepe was linked to the crime scene through, amongst others, phone records.
Mysteriously, Volksblad 's news-team reported that they were constantly being admonished by three prison services that the third accused,
Mbongeni Tiki 'could not be photographed' - despite the fact that Judge Van Zyl had granted official permission to photograph all three suspects. The 3 prison officials helped to cover Tiki's head with a blue towel to stop him from being photographed.
