For example, this very trustworthy facebook friend writes me on 28 March 2016 -
"My nephew surnamed (names deletedXXXX), his wife, children and his friends (a couple and their child) were all attacked last night around 3am in their holiday flat in Pennington, KZN... He (my nephew) was twice stabbed with a knife (in head and shoulder), their friend in an arm, his wife' broke a finger in their struggle to fight back. The children are traumatised. The minimum was stolen... cellphones etc. They have decided to return home to (XXXX) somewhere on the West Rand. We are grateful that they have all survived.'"Few of us can still stay that we have not been traumatised in some way by criminal actions. My sister - we live together -- was attacked in August 2015 last year around 05h30 at our front door enroute to work. He plucked her handbag from her shoulder. Her arm was bruised black and blue as she was trying to hold on to it. Fortunately he 'only' stole.. I will never forget her scream: you know at once and expect the worst. We have become keenly aware of '' criminal markers ' indicating that we are 'vulnerable targets' in front of our erf. We've both seen them before but without even telling each other simply picked up the bottles pointing to our erf and threw them away... the next morning, I'd forgotten my cellphone at home and when I returned, there was that bottle again. We live in (XXXXtown deleted) "What kind of life is this? To be afraid every day that something dreadful is going to happen to your loved ones? "-- (*It was reported yesterday at a UNICEF conference that South African children are the most murdered in violent crimes in the entire world...)
