According to his son, Bennie Pienaar (32), his father miraculously escaped death after he was shot by anarmed robber at 3am.
“It was a through-and through shot, where the bullet entered between the skull and the skin and narrowly missed Cameron’s brain,” he says.
Cameron has been hospitalised and is in a stable condition.
Three suspects gained entry to the house through the burglar bars in the kitchen and climbed through the window.
Pienaar says the three suspects, two armed with guns, first entered his aunt Louise Swanepoel’s bedroom and started assaulting her.
One suspect assaulted Swanepoel by hitting her over the head with the back of the gun, causing two cuts – one on her head and one on her forehead.
She was ordered to lie down on her bed, with one armed suspect guarding her while the other two suspects searched the house.
They returned to Swanepoel’s room and asked where the safe was.
When she told them they don’t have a safe in the house, the two suspects went to the main bedroom where Cameron and his wife Jenny Cameron (53) were sleeping.
After one suspect shined a torch light in Cameron’s face, he ordered the couple to stay still.
One armed suspect stayed with Swanepoel in her bedroom, and the other armed suspect stayed with the couple in the main bedroom, while the third suspect ransacked the house.
The suspect in the main bedroom ordered the couple to turn on their stomachs and fired a shot at Cameron’s head and left the room.
Pienaar says his father claims one of the guns used in the robbery was an SAPS service pistol.
The suspects took jewellery, cellphones, a table and laptop, and left the house the same way they had entered, namely, through the kitchen window.
The Springs police were called as were the paramedics who treated Cameron and Swanepoel at the scene.
The two wounded people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“I thank God my family is safe and I am grateful for the quick response of the police,” he says.
With his father in a stable condition, his aunt’s wounds being taken care of and his mother safe, he believes it is a good thing to organise counselling for the three victims.
Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, says a house robbery case was opened at the police station and the police are investigating the case.
