Piet Retief - A Swazi national accused of killing a Mpumalanga farmer and his wife has been remanded in custody.
The accused, John Madonsela, 35, was not asked to plead to one charge of murder and another of attempted murder when he appeared in the Piet Retief Periodical Court on Tuesday.
He is accused of killing Johannes van Zyl, 84, and assaulting his wife Charlotte, 55, at their farm house in Dirkiesdorp near Piet Retief on Saturday.
Charlotte succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday morning.
"After the death of Charlotte van Zyl on Tuesday morning, the attempted murder charge against Madonsela will be changed to murder," provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Gerald Sedibe told a News24 Correspondent.
The case against Madonsela, who is believed to have been an employee of the victims, has been postponed to Thursday. It has also been transferred.
Sedibe said the victims were brutally attacked with crutches.
"We have no information of other persons or family members believed to be staying at the house, except the two victims. Police have also no information of what was stolen in the house as the only people to provide such information were the two deceased," Sedibe said.
