SEDGEFIELD NEWS FLASH - A 73-year-old Sedgefield resident, who lives 500m from the police station, allegedly had to wait two-and-a-half hours for police to arrive on the scene after being attacked by blacks and held at knife-point at her home on Saturday night.

According to reports, the woman was not harmed, but a concerned resident felt the alleged delayed response by police could not be ignored.

Once her neighbours were alerted about the robbery they immediately called the Sedgefield Police station. “We informed them [police] of the armed robbery and were told there was no vehicle in Sedgefield. So we waited and waited, and waited.”

The neighbour added the first police vehicle arrived at the scene at 02:30. “She [victim] lives about 500 meters from the SAP station.”

The Knysna-Plett Herald is awaiting confirmation of the attack and comment from the provincial police liaison officer, Captain Malcolm Pojie.

UPDATE: Sedgefield police response ‘unacceptable’

SEDGEFIELD NEWS FLASH - On hearing allegations that police took two and a half hours to respond to an armed robbery that allegedly took place in Bleshoender Street, Sedgefield on Saturday November 28, Knysna Municipal Ward 2 councillor, Louise Hart expressed her frustration at the lack of proper policing in the area.

“The response time is unacceptable. The person at the police station should have alerted the Knysna police and they could have been there in 20 minutes maximum. But 2.5 hours later is unacceptable,” exclaimed Hart.

She said that Sedgefield has had tardy response from the police since she moved here some 24 years ago,” and added: “At one stage the Sedgefield Council even bought a small car for the police to use to respond to calls when the [police] van was not available.”

According to Hart the Sedgefield police station had its own police holding cells during that time, but it has since been demolished.

Hart explained that since those days the Sedgefield population has more than doubled, “but the level of service remained the same - one police van in Sedgefield.”

She added that residents have been promised an independent police station for many years but “it remains a pipe dream”.

“I would like to know when the service levels are going to improve and when are we getting our own police station,” questioned the councillor.
