The Bedfordview SAPS has urged residents to prioritise the safety of senior citizens.
This comes after an elderly woman was robbed and assaulted at her Klopperpark home last Tuesday.
According to the Bedfordview SAPS police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the woman was home with her son when two men walked into her house and pointed a firearm at them.
“The black attackers pushed the victim and her grandson into another room in the house while demanding money from them. She reported that minutes later two more men came into the house and assaulted her,” said W/O Nhlabathi.
The attackers fled the house with her clothes, jewellery, groceries and cash.
W/O Nhlabathi said the elderly woman was taken to hospital.
He warned family and friends of senior citizens to ensure they were taken care of at all times.
“Especially those living on their own. We need to make sure they have updated security and they know what to do in an emergency,” he said.
W/O Nhlabathi said the station is also concerned about the safety of the elderly in shopping centres.
“We find some senior citizens who are disorientated because they did not take medication, which can lead to them going missing and endangering their lives,” said W/O Nhlabathi.
“Also, we urge our elderly to refrain from driving during the night. It is dangerous and we need friends and families to monitor them. Due to poor eyesight, they can easily get involved in road accidents,” he said.
He said it is important for family members to conduct background checks on people providing garden and cleaning services to the elderly.
“Before you entrust them with the responsibility of looking after your gogo, please make sure you have their ID copies as well as their address and contact details of their next of kin,” said W/O Nhlabathi.
He said no arrests had been made and the SAPS is investigating a case of house robbery
