 ‘Heroic’ officer discharged

An officer shot and wounded in a shootout with ATM bombers in the east of Pretoria this week has been discharged.

Jean-Paul Visagie was discharged from the Pretoria East hospital on Friday morning around 10:00 following a week long stay.

Girlfriend Vicky Orban said he was moved from the intensive care unit recently – to the ordinary ward and discharged around 10:00.

She said Visagie was recovering well after he was shot in his left arm on Tuesday morning.

“I fetched him from hospital and I am happy there aren’t any complications.”

She said Visagie was due for a check-up in two weeks but was well on his way to recovery.

This follows a plethora of well wishes sent to Bull Security on social media wishing the now known as a ‘Heroic officer’ a speedy recovery.

Bull Security spokesperson French Jooste said: “We are thankful to every community member, our clients, radio stations and newspapers for the messages, phone calls and Facebook messages. I will make sure every message gets to him.”

Jooste said three Bull Security vehicles responded to investigate the cause of the two loud explosions at the shopping centre on Tuesday.

The explosions were an ATM bombed at the Cornwall shopping centre in Elardus Park.

He said the alleged ATM bombers immediately opened fire as Bull Security vehicles attempted to cut them off.

Visagie was transported to the Pretoria East hospital by Netcare 911 medics.

Jooste said no one else was injured.

Meanwhile police had since launched a manhunt for the group travelling in three vehicles linked to the ATM bombing.

Spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said no arrests were made but investigations were underway.

He confirmed a group wielding automated weapons opened fire on Bull Security officers in an attempt to make their escape after bombing a Standard Bank ATM on Tuesday.
