AfriForum demands response from SAPS after more occurrences of crime in White River

The civil rights organisation AfriForum demanded written response from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and will be holding a meeting with the police in White River on Tuesday, 14 June.
This follows after the SAPS failed to take action against a group of people, presumably residents of the Msholozi informal settlement in White River, after they irreparably damaged a newly erected farm fence and ransacked the property.
Nearly 30 farmers had to intervene out of sheer necessity to chase away the trespassers.
According to Johann Weber, AfriForum’s Regional Coordinator for Mpumalanga East, the SAPS was on the scene, but didn’t make any attempt to arrest the trespassers.
“The SAPS simply advised the farm manager involved to go and talk with the community leader of Msholozi in order to reach an agreement.”
According to Weber, many occurrences of crime in the area as well as continuing problems with residents of the informal settlement have already been reported at the SAPS, but it keeps falling on deaf ears. Weber mentions further that illegal power connections to Msholozi also recently hampered water supply to the town.
“The SAPS fails in their duty to protect citizens and prosecute trespassers,” says Weber.
