The suspects did not get very far and were cornered by the Benoni Flying Squad in Tembisa, during which action one suspect was killed, Norkem Park SAPS spokesman Capt Lesibana Molokomme explained.
The incident took place at around 10:30m, at a house on Elgin Road, Birchleigh.
“The suspects were known to the complainant, who employed them to fit his kitchen cupboards.
”He left them with his wife and kids and went to buy materials. When he returned he was attacked by the same employees,” added Molokomme.
“They took his car and properties and fled the scene. On their way to Tembisa the car was spotted by the Benoni Flying Squad. A chase took place to Vusimusi section, in Tembisa, where a shootout ensued between the police and suspects. One suspect was shot and killed,” Molokomme pointed out.
One suspect is still at large.
The car and some of the property were recovered.
“We are making and urgent appeal to the community to ensure that they have a full profile when employing someone,” Molokomme advised, adding that residents should take along a copy of their ID or passport, and they should list the name and address of their next of kin, as well as contact numbers.
“They must not leave employees in the house with women and children. This creates an opportunity for crime.”
A case of house robbery, possession of stolen property (including the stolen vehicle) and attempted murder was opened at the Tembisa South Police Station.
