The couple had come back from shopping when the vehicle with suspects parked behind their vehicle.

The suspects then ordered the couple and their domestic worker to go into the house and took some items.

The couple’s son-in-law who arrived at the their home a few minutes after them, noticed the suspects’ car outside, but at the time did not see anything suspicious, but as he entered the premises, he was also ordered by the suspects to go into the house.

“A neighbour realised that something was wrong and alerted EMPD officers.

“As the metro police officers rushed towards the house the suspects started shooting at them with an AK-47 assault rifle and a revolver.

“In the shoot-out that ensued, one of the suspects with an AK-47 was shot dead and the other two were wounded,” says EMPD spokesman Wilfred Kgasago.

He adds that unfortunately during the shoot-out, one 16-year-old learner caught a stray bullet in the leg and had to be rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

“One of the two wounded suspects, apparently with a leg wound, managed to evade arrest as the place was at that time crowded with learners and pedestrians milling around.

“The other suspect suffered a head wound and was transported to the Far East Rand Hospital where he is under police guard in the intensive care unit,” he adds.

None of the metro police officers nor the victims suffered any injuries.

Law enforcement officers recovered two AK-47 rifles and one cellphone believed to belonging to one of the suspects.

The vehicle used by the perpetrators of this crime was positively identified as a vehicle hijacked in Boksburg North.

The case was registered at Springs Police Station and the arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court as soon as he is medically cleared to do so, states Kgasago.

Local police spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora confirms that an inquest and a case of house robbery and attempted murder was opened.

He adds that the injured suspect has since been transferred to Johannesburg Hospital and is still in a critical condition.

Ramphora states that the Provincial Investigation Unit will be probing the case as police discovered that the deceased suspect was wanted by them in relation to other cases.
