Yesterday (20 April) at around 3.40pm while one of the Record’s journalists was in a meeting, he noticed a police van speeding through the forecourt of a filling station opposite the Caxton West Rand office. The van then stopped in Ham Street right next to the office’s boardroom and right within the range of the CCTV camera. A foreign national, known to sell illegal DVDs, got out of the van and walked to his normal station in front of the building.

The journalist followed him but fearing the police members might realise he was on to them, he went back into the boardroom. He watched through the window how an exchange was being made between the cops and the DVD seller. After a minute the hawker got back into the vehicle and left with the cops.

The journalist managed to take down the call signal on the vehicle as well as the registration number.

When the journalist confronted the hawker the next day he admitted that the cops in question often would come and confiscate their merchandise for themselves.

It should be mentioned that Roodepoort is not the Krugersdorp Police’s jurisdiction and that dealing with illegal traders and counterfeit goods is the business of the Metro Police and not the police.

It is no secret that the Krugersdorp Police have their batch of rotten apples within the station who often are being caught stepping over the line.

Various complaints and allegations have made their way to the News regarding the misconduct of officers on duty. Some of the allegations include being on the payrolls of Nigerian nationals operating in Sivewright Street, taking bribes from residents and even shoplifting.

Although many residents have been victims of this kind of corruption or have witnessed it, there has been no solid evidence to prove the allegations of misconduct – until now

The News contacted the Krugersdorp Police for comment regarding the incident. They will respond in due course.
