Man escapes deadly surprise waiting inside his garage
Westville resident Brett Bailes had just returned home in the evening when he was attacked by two men inside his garage.

“I was getting out of my car when two guys rushed at me,” the Victoria Crescent resident said.

Bailes was carrying his bag at the time and said: “I wasn’t sure whether they wanted my bag or my car.”

Last week, as he was standing off with the men, he pressed the alarm remote in his hand, alerting security.

“The guy asked me what I was doing and I told him I was calling the police.”

The criminals fired about two shots and Bailes said he “fell down in shock”. They fled, thinking that he was dead.

“There was blood all over the place.” He said an ambulance came to take him to hospital.

A bullet had grazed his head.

This was not the first time he had been attacked in his home. “I am getting used to it,” he quipped.

The incident happened after he had sold his house and was looking for another place to live.

John Welsh, spokesperson for the South African Gun Owners’ Association, said if a person was being attacked they should “never try to confront a knife- or gun-wielding assailant. You will come off second best.”

He said that while it was difficult, try to stay calm and accede to the demands of the attacker.

Welch said one should look for an opportunity to run away, but this should not risk one’s life, or that of a loved one.

“Things do not happen they way they do in the movies, and one should not try to be a hero,” he said.

Reporting the matter to the police and providing accurate descriptions of the criminals would help.

Police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala, said a case of attempted murder is being investigated by Westville police.
