Johannesburg - Zandspruit protesters were not deterred on Wednesday by the teargas canisters and rounds of bullets fired at them by police.
One resident told News24 that the protest action was sparked by Eskom unexpectedly cutting their electricity connection.
"They cut our electricity without any notice and they didn't even put electricity meters in the shacks. We want electricity. If there is no electricity, the strike will continue until they bring electricity to Honeydew," said Peter Makena.
Another resident, Sabatha Mokhethi, said they were expecting officials from Mayor Parks Tau's offence to come and address them otherwise the disruptions would continue.
"If people don't have a response tonight, the strike will carry on and there will end up being chaos," Mokhethi said.
Clouds of black smoke rose from parts of the informal settlement, the still-smouldering remains of tyres which had earlier been set alight in the middle of roads.
The protesters also burned rubbish bins before running and hiding behind shacks when police approached.
Five police officers were injured during the protest action.
"They sustained slight injuries after they were hit by stones," said Lieutenant Kay Makhubela.
Six protesters had since been arrested.
"We will continue to monitor the situation," Makhubela said.
The protest started on Tuesday night when protesters looted a kiosk at a local petrol station, damaging an ATM there and burning the shop down.
They also pelted vehicles with stones

■ Johannesburg - Protesting Zandspruit residents destroyed a petrol station shop near their informal settlement in northern Johannesburg on Tuesday night, Gauteng police said.

Police later fired rubber bullets and teargas at stone-throwing protesters.

"They looted the shop at the garage and damaged the ATM. They then burned the shop," Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday night, they began blocking roads with burning tyres and threw stones at passing vehicles. Police managed to arrest only one person as the rest of the protesters fled into the informal settlement.

On Wednesday morning, police were using teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the group. Nobody had been reported injured,  Makhubela said.

Meanwhile, Beyers Naude remained closed to traffic between Johan and Peter roads. Motorists were advised to use the N14 and Hendrik Potgieter as alternatives, said metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

According to reports on social media, the protest was over electricity connections.
