Marie Hann, one of the squatters who were forced to sleep outside in the rain last week, said she was literally thrown out of the cemetery, Krugersdorp News reported.

“People from Social Services and the Red Ants asked us to leave the cemetery and when we resisted they literally threw us out,” Hann said.
All of their belongings, including food and blankets, were strewn in the street in front of the cemetery’s entrance, she further alleged.
However, Mogale City spokesperson Nkosana Zali said the squatters had “invaded” the cemetery, which was not meant for human residence.
“It is generally regarded as a sacred place where the remains of all our loved ones are buried. After representations with the people to vacate the cemetery, the municipality was left with no option but to enforce its bylaws,” he said.
Zali added the municipality would continue to provide adequate housing for all deserving residents “regardless of the colour of their skin”.
“The municipality is working very hard with the provincial Department of Human Settlements and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to ensure accelerated housing delivery in the city. We are empathetic to the plight of those who need houses,” he said.
