Woman in ICU after Bay CBD attack
A 23-year-old Meerensee woman is recovering from emergency brain surgery in the ICU of a private Durban hospital after being attacked with a brick on Monday in the Richards Bay CBD.
The woman, whose identity is being withheld on request of her family, suffered an open wound, skull fracture and brain haemorrhage.
The incident allegedly occurred after her boyfriend was tailed to a parking area by another driver and passenger after an altercation on the wet road.
According to her father, his daughter, who arrived in her own vehicle, witnessed her boyfriend in physical confrontation with the two men.
When she intervened, one of the men allegedly approached her and she used her pepper spray.
A third bystander, with no involvement in the initial argument, hurled a brick at her head and fled from the scene.
‘He was chased by a manager from a nearby shop, but escaped when he was picked up by the driver of a Silver Renault Megane metered taxi (registration number recorded).
The same vehicle allegedly later brought the attacker back to the scene, where he was seen chatting to a crowd.
The woman was rushed to Netcare The Bay Hospital and shortly thereafter transferred to the Durban facility where a neurosurgeon operated on her.
‘As a family, it is very traumatic to deal with a seriously injured child and the shocking attack,’ said her father.
‘The attacker had nothing to do with the initial argument and the driver of the vehicle helped him to escape.
‘We have opened a case of attempted murder and the matter is being investigated by the police.
‘The medical reports noting the extent of her injuries will also be handed to the investigating officer.
‘We wish to thank the medical personnel, the excellent neurosurgeon Dr Stellenberg and everybody who assisted in any way.
‘She is still in ICU and in the process of recovery.’
