An abandoned chicken farm in Bronberrick, Centurion, is still overrun with illegal squatters living in shacks, despite years of campaigning by ward councillors and residents for them to be evicted.

Ward councillor Peter Sutton says he has been campaigning for six years to have the squatters removed, but to no avail.

“Current estimates put the population of the squatters between 100 and 150, including young children,” said Sutton.

“We have attempted to get theTshwane metro to clean up the property, as it belongs to the metro. We have also asked to it to be properly fenced. We have had no joy as yet.”

Some of the squatters claim they paid for permission to build a shack. They also say they do not pay for services like water and electricity.

“As the metro owns this property, it could easily lease it and make money out of it. Some schools in the area have also offered to take the property off the metro’s hands, but it has refused,” said Sutton.

“This needs to be solved as soon as possible. Many residents living in the shacks have full-time jobs and unfortunately the property has become a hideout for criminals stealing from neighbouring houses.”

Rekord has sent an enquiry to the metro to ascertain its plans for the vacant land but no response has been received yet.
