Foreign national shop owners closed their shops after protesters began looting some of the shops in Ext 25.

“We decised to close the shops because we want to protect ourselves and our shops,” said a shop owner who also said they will first monitor the situation before they reopen.

The Kinross Police spokesman, Sgt Matselane Nhlapo, confirmed that two people were arrested for public violence.

Police warn motorists to be cautious when using the R29 road from Kinross to Leandra because of the protesters who have barricaded the road with stones and burning tyres.

“If possible, motorists should avoid using the R29 and rather use the N17,” said Major Nape Matlala of Kinross Police Station.

Protesters are also throwing stones at cars.

It is not known when the protest will end.

One resident was furious after the protesters used her wooden beams to make fire and her corrugated iron to protect themselves from the police rubber bullets.

“They are going to buy me new beams and corrugated iron.”

Protesters are threatening those who are going to work and the public transport is affected.

KINROSS – Afghanistan township residents were forced to skip work and school after protesters barricaded the roads with stones and burned tyres at Kinross, Ext 25 this morning.
Afghanistan and Marikana residents began protesting after the State of the Nation Address last night.
They are against the ANC candidate who will be standing in as a Councillor for the local government elections.
Police tried to calm the situation early this morning but to no avail.
“We live in a democratic country and we have the right to choose a candidate to represent us.
“If they do not listen to our demands, we will make sure that elections will not take place in Kinross,” said one of the protesters.
The protest is expected to continue throughout the weekend.
Kinross Police spokesperson, Sgt Matselane Nhlapo said there have been no injuries or looting.
“We are monitoring the situation to make sure that it does not get out of hand,” said Sgt Nhlapo.
