THE vehicle of a man relaxing in a Birch Acres park on Saturday afternoon was hijacked by three armed men.

The hijacked Toyota Corolla was recovered in Tembisa by the metro police shortly afterwards.

This was one of four vehicles recovered by Ekurhuleni Metro Police in Tembisa over the weekend.

According to Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, the victim was in the park on Maraboe Street after 2pm when he was rudely disturbed by three men armed with handguns who took his Toyota Corolla.

The vehicle was found abandoned in Temong Section in Tembisa by EMPD loss control and investigations unit members.

The culprits are still at large.

In a second incident a Toyota Voxy SUV hijacked in Rustenburg on Thursday night was recovered by the metro police at around 6.40am the next morning.

“The tracking system of the hijacked vehicle led the metro police to Ethafeni Section in Tembisa where the vehicle was found with one suspect in it. The suspect, who is in his 30s, was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle at Tembisa Police Station,” Kgasago said.

The EMPD’s loss control and investigations unit also worked with Matrix vehicle tracking company to trace a Toyota Hi-Ace kombi stolen in Lenasia on Friday morning at 3am.

The vehicle was traced via its GPS coordinates, which pointed to the intersection of Ipintombi and Mfana streets in Ivory Park, Midrand. The kombi was found abandoned at 4am.

The hunt is on for the persons responsible.

In another incident a second security officer was hijacked and robbed within 24 hours of the first crime.

Kgasago said two males attacked the officer working for Hwibidu Security on Friday night in Temibsa shortly after 10pm. The security officer was hijacked and had his service pistol taken after being dumped in Tembisa.

The swift reaction of the EMPD and vehicle tracking company personnel resulted in the vehicle being recovered 14 minutes later on Kgomotso Maredi Street in Khatlamping Section in Tembisa. Although the suspects are still at large, law enforcers are working around the clock to apprehend the suspects.

“This hijacking of a security officer and the robbing of a firearm follows closely on a similar disturbing incident that took place in Olifantsfontein the night before. In-depth investigations are under way in an effort to nip this type of a crime in the bud,” Kgasago said.
