Eskom says it will be going ahead on Tuesday to disconnect power to four Eastern Cape Municipalities.
They are Gariep, Maletswai, Ikwezi and Nxuba Municipalities which together owe the power the utility more than R172 million rand for a number of years.
Eskom Eastern Cape spokesperson, Ntosh Mafumbata, said the towns that will be affected by the disconncetions are Steynburg, Aliwal North, Jansenville, Adelaide and Bedford.
Mafumbata said negotiations are underway with the affected municipalities to find solutions to how they will be able to service their debt.
However, she said there were currently negotiations underway "between Eskom and these municipalities around finding a solution on how they can be able to service the debt that they have been owing Eskom for the past years."
"The one thing that we want to highlight at the moment is that after considering the submissions that have been done by the different stakeholders that would have been impacted by the challenge of disconnection we then agreed that we will disconnect as from tomorrow (Tues 22 Dec) 6am until 9am and then on the same day we will also disconnect between 12pm and 2pm and again at 5pm to 9pm," Mafumbata said.
"Every day we will be disconnecting at those times and the reason for that is that we are considering what has been submitted so that we minimise the impact on the business sector, we minimise the impact during Christamas time and we minimise the impact to essential services and emergency services. These are considerations that we had to look into and then we had to take this kind of a decision."
